Amid the Pandemic COVID-19

Henry Ford, a known business magnate once said, “Education is not preparation for life, but a part of life – a continuous part.” With this line lies my will and aspiration for continuous education. Hi everyone! I am Joeylyn Aguilloso from the Philippines. I have a background in marketing as an educator, marketing professional and media content producer.

Studying overseas has always been my dream and to be able to achieve it in one of my favorite country was a dream come true. Last year, I was one of the privileged students chosen to be a scholar at Geumgang University Language Center in Nonsan, South Korea. The opportunity came at a time when I was on top of my career and so I contemplated hard whether I should stay or pursue studying abroad and leave my budding career behind. And I’m glad that I chose the latter and able to continue working online while studying. The overall experience was very conducive to learning the Korean language as well as the Korean culture. I was able to gain new knowledge and new friends along the way through our intensive classes, cultural exposure trips and the Global Partnership Program.

해외에서 공부하는 것은 항상 나의 꿈이었고 내가 가장 좋아하는 나라에서 공부하게 된 것은 저의 꿈이 실현된 것입니다. 작년에, 저는 한국 논산에 있는 금강대학교 어학원의 장학생으로 선택된 영광스러운 학생 중 한 명이었어요. 그 기회는 제가 저의 경력에서 전성기에 있을 때 왔고 그래서 저는 제가 남아서 공부를 해야 할지 아니면 제 싹트는 경력을 뒤로 해야 할지 열심히 고민했습니다. 그리고 후자를 선택하여 공부하면서 온라인 작업도 계속할 수 있게 되어 기쁩니다. 전반적인 경험은 한국 문화뿐만 아니라 한국어를 배우는 데에도 매우 도움이 되었습니다. 집중적인(짧은 시간에 많은 일·활동을 하는) 수업, 문화 노출 여행, 글로벌 파트너십 프로그램을 통해 새로운 지식과 새로운 친구들을 얻을 수 있었습니다.

Just when I thought that everything is going to be fine after the previous semester, an unexpected pandemic quickly spread in the different parts of the world including South Korea. I was once again faced with a dilemma whether to continue studying abroad or to stay in my home country amid the pandemic COVID-19. There were few challenges alongside the health risk of traveling to a place hit by this pandemic such as city lockdown and flight cancellations. Nevertheless, I was able to return to South Korea safely in time for the opening of the spring semester.

지난 학기 이후에 모든 것이 잘 될 것이라고 생각했을 때, 예상치 못한 전염병이 한국을 포함한 세계 여러 지역으로 빠르게 퍼졌습니다. 저는 유행을 겪고 있는 COVID-19에서 해외 유학을 계속하거나 모국에 머무를 것인지에 대한 딜레마에 다시 직면했습니다. 도시 폐쇄 및 비행 취소와 같은 유행병으로 피해를 입은 곳으로 여행 할 때 건강상의 위험과 함께 몇 가지 어려움이 있었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 저는 봄 학기 개강을 위해 시간 안에 안전하게 한국으로 돌아올 수 있었습니다.

As soon as I arrived at the dormitory, I observed a 2-week self-quarantine and Geumgang University Language Center provided the much-needed facial masks and a hygienic hand sanitizer. I was also given a thermometer so I could monitor my body temperature for the succeeding weeks and report it to the school admin. These measures were applied to every foreign student arriving in GGU to ensure each and everyone’s safety amid the pandemic.

저는 기숙사에 도착하자마자 2주간의 자기 격리를 했고 금강대학교 어학원에서는 필요한 마스크와 위생적인 ​​손 소독제를 제공했습니다. 또한 체온을 측정하여 몇 주 동안 모니터링하고 학교 관리자에게 보고 할 수 있었습니다. 이러한 조치는 전염병에 처한 모든 사람의 안전을 보장하기 위해 GGU에 도착하는 모든 유학생에게 적용되었습니다.

We have recently started our classes and precautionary measures are still being observed. No one knows when this health crisis will end but what I am sure of is that the South Korean government and the university are doing their best to protect its people, both locals and foreigners. Despite the pandemic, I am still looking forward to another great semester this year and welcome new learnings and challenges that may come. To continue my education and pursue new knowledge and skills in a foreign land pose some risks but I believe in what Benjamin Franklin said that “an investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

우리는 최근에 수업을 시작했으며 예방 조치가 여전히 지켜지고 있습니다. 이 건강 위기가 언제 끝날지는 아무도 모릅니다. 그러나 제가 확신하는 것은 한국 정부와 대학이 자국민과 외국인 모두를 보호하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있다는 것입니다. 전염병에도 불구하고, 나는 여전히 올해 다른 좋은 학기를 고대하고 있으며 앞으로 올 새로운 학습과 도전을 환영합니다. 외국에서 교육을 계속하고 새로운 지식과 기술을 추구하는 것은 위험을 초래할 수 있지만 벤자민 프랭클린은 “지식에 대한 투자가 가장 큰 이익을 가져다 준다”고 말한 것을 믿어요.

I pray for the safety of each and every one of us and I hope that everything will be back to its normal course the soonest. Please stay healthy physically and mentally, and may we find the silver lining amid this situation.
