Hamby's life in GGU

Q. Hello! We're Geumgang Webzine. Thank you for your willingness to interview. Please introduce yourself.

A. Hello, my name is Grace Hamby (you can just call me Hamby). I am 22 years old and I am from the United States. I graduated from Oberlin College in the Spring of 2020 with a Major in East Asian Studies, and Minors in Environmental Studies and Creative Writing. I am originally from White Plains, a mid-sized city in New York State.

안녕하세요, 제 이름은 그레이스 햄비예요 (그냥 햄비라고 불러도 된답니다) 저는 22살이고 미국에서 왔어요. 2020년 봄, Oberlin 대학에서 동아시아를 전공하고, 환경 연구와 창의적 글쓰기를 부전공하고 졸업했어요. 저는 원래 뉴욕주의 중급 도시인 White Plains에서 살다가 왔어요.

While attending Oberlin College I was a part of three big student organizations. The Oberlin Student Cooperative Association, WOBC (the school’s radio station), and the Taiko club. For the three years I was at Oberlin I lived and dined in a cooperative. The cooperative is like an alternative dormitory/dining hall. I worked for four hours a week cooking and cleaning in the co-operative and paid half of the school’s room and board fee. The cooperative is entirely student run, meaning we basically maintain a dining hall and dormitory on our own. In the cooperative I learned a lot about cooking vegetarian food in large quantities and about managing large student organizations.

Oberlin 대학에 다닐 때 세 가지의 큰 학생 단체에 참여했어요. Oberlin 학생 협동조합(역자 주 : 우리나라 대학의 생활 협동조합과 유사한 단체), WOBC (대학의 라디오 방송국), 그리고 태고(역자 주 : 일본 전통의 타악기) 동아리를 했어요. Oberlin에 다니던 삼 년 동안은 협동조합에서 먹고 자는 것을 해결했어요. 협동조합에는 대안 기숙사와 식당이 있어요. 한 주에 네 시간 동안 협동조합에서 요리와 청소 일을 했어요. 그 덕분에 대학교의 등록금 반만 내도 됐죠. 협동조합은 전적으로 학생들이 운영해서, 기본적으로 식당과 기숙사 운영은 우리 스스로 했어요. 저는 협동조합에서의 경험 덕분에 많은 양의 채소 요리나, 학생 단체를 운영하는 것에 대해 많이 배울 수 있었죠.

During my last year at school, I had an hour-long radio show once a week. The theme of my show was Korean indie music. Some of my favorite artists to play were 못, 파라솔, and The Black Skirts. The other music-related activity I did was Taiko. Taiko is a form of Japanese drumming, it is somewhat similar to Nanta. Playing Taiko is probably one of the things I miss most right now. It is extremely fun, physical and is great for stress-relief. There are videos of my club performing at different festivals from this year, but I think it is hard to capture just how loud Taiko is from videos alone.

제가 학교에 있던 마지막 해에는, 매주 한 시간씩 라디오 쇼가 있었어요. 바로, 한국 인디 음악을 소개하는 방송이었죠. 제가 제일 좋아하는 아티스트는 못(MOT), 파라솔, 그리고 검정치마에요. 다른 음악 활동으론 태고 동아리를 했죠. 태고는 일본의 전통 북인데, 한국의 난타와 비슷해요. 요즘 제가 가장 그리워하는 게 태고를 치는 것이에요. 정말 재밌고, 활동적이며, 스트레스를 날려주거든요. 올해 제가 있던 태고 동아리가 다른 축제 현장에서 공연한 영상이 있는데, 영상으로는 태고의 소리가 얼마나 큰지 잘 전달되지 않을 것 같네요.

Q. We wonder why you came to Korea and why did you think you should learn Korean?

A. I decided to come to Korea now because I knew I would regret it if I didn’t. I first started learning Korean when I was a high school student. I spent a Summer taking classes for fun (at that time I was really into U-Kiss, Beast, and B.A.P.)I ended up enjoying the classes way more than I expected, and kept studying in my spare time. While I was a college student I spent a Summer in Seoul. I thought that once I went to Seoul I’d magically become fluent, make Korean friends, and go to concerts every weekend. Obviously, that didn’t happen. Instead, I spent most of my time with my American classmates speaking English. Since I didn’t feel satisfied with that Summer of studying, I decided that I needed to try again. And that’s why I came to Geumgang University!

제가 한국에 온 이유는, 그러지 않으면 후회할 것 같았어요. 저는 고등학생 때 처음 한국어를 배우기 시작했는데요. 어느 여름엔 유키스, 비스트, B.A.P의 음악에 푹 빠진 채로 수업을 들으면서 즐겁게 보내기도 했죠. 기대했던 것보다 더 즐겁게 수업을 들을 수 있었고, 여가 시간에도 공부를 하게 되더라고요. 또, 대학생 때 서울에서 여름을 보낸 적에 있어요. 서울에 가면 한국어도 마법처럼 유창해지고, 한국인 친구들도 사귀며, 주말마다 콘서트도 갈 수 있을 것으로 생각했거든요. 확실한 건, 그러한 일은 일어나지 않았어요. 그 대신 저는 대부분의 시간을 미국인 학우들과 영어로 대화하면서 보내게 됐죠. 그 여름에 겪었던 한국어 공부에 만족하지 못했기 때문에, 저는 다시 도전하기로 결심했고, 금강대학교에 오게 되었어요.

Q. So, what was your impression of Geumgang University?

A. I wanted to go to a place similar to Oberlin College. Like Geumgang University, Oberlin College is a small school in the middle of the countryside. Oberlin is surrounded by acres of flat land filled with corn and soybeans, and the nearest city is an hour’s drive away. Perhaps because I am used to being in the middle of nowhere, I have a great impression of Geumgang University. I love the way the mountains here are, how the mist covers the campus in the mornings, and how I can hear the cows mooing through the day. To me it is idyllic, nowhere in the U.S. would I be able to experience a landscape or life like this. In the U.S. there are no persimmon trees on the edge of the road heavy with fruit, or dogs running up to you at the bus stop. No bus rides to town, or hotteok sold on the side of the road. There are times when being in the countryside feels isolating, but it isn’t too hard to go to Daejeon or Seoul for a day trip and get my fix of city life.

저는 Oberlin 대학과 비슷한 곳으로 가고 싶었어요. 금강대학교처럼, Oberlin 대학은 시골 한가운데에 있는 작은 대학이죠. Oberlin은 옥수수밭과 콩밭으로 가득한 평야에 둘러쌓여 있고, 가장 가까운 도시는 차로 1시간 거리에 있어요. 아마도 허허벌판에 익숙해서인지, 금강대학교에 대한 인상도 훌륭했어요. 이곳의 산들이나, 아침마다 안개가 캠퍼스를 뒤덮는 풍경, 그리고 소들의 울음소리가 온종일 들리는 환경이 너무나 좋아요. 참 목가적인 풍경이지만, 미국 어디에서도 이러한 풍경이나 삶을 경험하기는 어려울 거예요. 미국에는 길가에 감이 주렁주렁 달린 감나무도 없고, 버스정류장의 당신에게 달려오는 시골 개들도 없으며, 길가에서 호떡을 팔지도 않죠. 시골에서 지내다 보면 고립감을 느낄 때도 있지만, 대전이나 서울로 당일치기 여행을 떠나 도시 생활에 대해서 알아 나가는 것도 어렵지 않아요.

Q. What kind of experiences do you expect to have at Geumgang University?

A. My biggest hope for my time at Geumgang, perhaps obviously, is to become better at Korean. I want to make good friends with the people here, eat Korean food, and experience a culture and country different from my own. To put it succinctly, I want to experience things I won’t be able to find in the United States.

금강대에서 지내는 동안의 가장 큰 희망은 당연히 한국어를 더 잘하게 되는 것이겠죠. 또 이곳에서 좋은 친구들을 만나, 함께 한국 음식도 먹고, 저와는 다른 문화와 나라도 경험해 보고 싶어요. 한 줄 요약하면, 저는 미국에서 볼 수 없는 것들을 경험하고 싶어요.

Q. What message do you want to send to Geumgang University students?

A. I don’t have any words of wisdom to pass on to other Geumgang students. Just, if you see me around, say hi. I’d be more than happy to answer questions about the U.S, or to exchange Indie music recommendations.

제가 금강대학교 학생들에게 해줄 지혜로운 말은 없어요. 그냥, 저를 본다면 인사해줘요. 만약 미국에 대한 질문을 주거나, 인디 음악에 대한 추천을 주고받는다면 더없이 기쁠 거에요.
